A closeup of the building - they're pretty sure it used to be covered in marble

A view to the interior

At the Foro Romano

At the Foro Romano

Somewhere in the Forum - the doors are original, apparently

Taken in the late evening near the Barberini Metro

In the colonnade at the Piazza at St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican

The columns in the colonnade were huge!

Borromini's self-indulgent work - the San Carlo Alle Quattro Fontane in Rome

The emperor Hadrian built himself a huge villa outside of Rome, including this amazing naval theater

A column at Hadrian's Villa - like the Colosseum, everything here used to be faced in marble, but it was ransacked through the ages

A little marble somehow got passed over and remains on some ruins at Hadrian's Villa

This was actually in the servants' quarters at Hadrian's Villa

Still at Hadrian's Villa

These statues are at the far end of Hadrian's Villa, but it's well worth the walk

We ended up at the Hotel Mignon in Sorrento that was on this charming (little) street

Hard to believe this was all buried in ash.

The volcano (still active) looming over the city

Near the large theater in Pompei

This is the small theater in Pompei

This is actually a reproduction of a wine/grape press they found at Pompei

Here we are at Pompei, with Vesuvius in the background

This is the main drag in Sorrento (notice all the motorbikes)

We took a hike down to Capo di Sorrento to see some Roman ruins, but the coastline was much more exciting

This is about a 4 or 5 kilometer hike from the center of Sorrento

From the cape, we had a nice view across to the beautifully illuminated town of San Angello

We took another hike up into the hills above the city and were treated to some nice views across the Bay of Naples

Another view from the hills - unfortunately, we had to turn back not long after this due to the very territorial guard dogs in the hills

Back in Rome, a view from the Spanish Steps

The Tempieto (an architecturally important but kinda small, unassuming building) is situated on a hill in Trastavere - nice view back towards the city

The Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II - it's huge, and gorgeous!

Most of the pictures I took in the Vatican didn't really come out, but just imagine miles of corridors filled with immeasurably expensive artifacts

Abby decided to make the climb up to the dome at St. Peter's [Photo credit to Abby]
