What's been on my mind lately? Read on...

If you live in Seattle, you owe it to yourself to check out the puppet show (for grownups – it’s “delightfully inappropriate”) A Boy in the Beastly City. It’s like all the best parts of Family Guy turned into a silhouette puppet show about a boy who lost his monkey – it’s got musical numbers, entertaining asides and tangents, and fantastic voice talent. See it before they close on February 16th. (And you don’t just have to take my word for it – The Stranger recommends it!)

I went with Jared & Chika to see the puppets last night, and afterward they introduced me to Maekawa, a great izakaya (Japanese bar food) restaurant in the International District. Hooray for more late-night food options.

As predicted, the robot arm circuit boards arrived just in time for me to head off to San Francisco and not make any progress this week on the project. From what I can tell so far, 4pcb did a great job on the boards, for about half the price of their next competitor. Plus they included some microwave popcorn in the box! Though I won’t get to work on it much this week, I did put together a list of parts that I don’t have for the board, and I’ll put in a DigiKey order while I’m in California. It’s gonna be a busy month and a half counting down to my birthday (target date for the robot arm’s debut)!

According to the 4pcb website, my robot arm circuit boards shipped today. I’ll be in San Francisco all next week, so I’ll have to wait to play EE ’til the next weekend.

Should be a fun trip – I’m going for a ProEngineer training class, and will have some time in the evenings to catch up with Bay Area friends. As an added bonus, Rif & Anna will be there, too – I’m looking forward to catching up with them, watching some football, and finding some good eats.

In other news, my dad’s book, Transforming Schools with Technology, has been published. I don’t have a copy yet, but I’m looking forward to reading it. Congrats, dad!

L.A. pictures coming soon. In the meantime, you can drool over the menu at The Counter, where I ate on Sunday night. Unlike this guy, I chose sparingly, and had a great burger with ginger soy glaze, avocado, fried onion strings, scallions and carrots.

In other (big) news, I ordered the PCB for the robot arm controller today from 4pcb. They had the best prices for low quantities, and I’ve heard some good things about them. By mid-February, I’ll have a board!

My L.A. weekend was everything I’d hoped it’d be and more. Pictures and more to come soon.

It’s actually nice to be back in work mode these days, but I’m not complaining about my upcoming trip to L.A. for Lei-Out. Should be a great weekend of frisbee, especially since it’s supposed to be 20 degrees warmer there than in Seattle. It’s my first trip to L.A., but I think I won’t have too much time to explore the city. There’s a bunch I’d like to see (like the concert hall and the Getty Museum) and I have some friends down there, so I’m sure I’ll make it back.
