Some friends and I signed up to participate in the annual Winter Pineapple Classic next weekend – a 5K, Hawaiian-themed fun run (with obstacle course) in Seattle. Should be a hoot, especially since we’re planning on running in coconut bras. It’s also a fundraiser for a good cause, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. If you’re […]

A short list of things I would like to purchase, but will wait until I’m gainfully employed to do so: a Chumby a carpet for my living room this book this t-shirt Told you it was short.

I’ve started playing around with WordPress a bit, and so far I’m impressed. I was a little wary of the installation procedure, but it went off without a hitch (guess you don’t get to be a successful open-source software package if it’s a pain to download & install). I wonder, does Blogger get jealous when […]

Well, the ice cream held up admirably after a day or two, and by three, it was all gone, so I couldn’t say what the texture was like after that. The Donvier machine isn’t that much work, but it is hand-cranked. It’d be nice to be able to put in the ice cream base, press […]

I was a little worried that I overcooked the custard base last night for the coffee ice cream I’m making, but it appears I managed to save it. And boy is it tasty! It’s also got great texture. According to this page, there are a few ways to keep homemade ice cream soft. I used […]

The site redesign is proceeding, at least in my mind (no bits have been committed to disk). Drew had some good thoughts on using WordPress. Probably will be a while before it shows up online, though, especially with the several other projects I have going, including a resume redesign, a scarf, and of course the […]

Though it’s not exactly down the street from my house, and it’s not as impressive as McClendon’s or Hardwick’s, I’m glad that City Hardware opened up in South Lake Union/Cascade (that ambiguously named neighborhood near REI). It’s nice to have a real hardware store (sorry Pacific Supply) relatively close by.

Cheers to Jake for the extended loan of a PC, which will greatly aid in the timely completion of the robot arm. Could it actually happen before my 30th birthday in March? Stay tuned…

As I was looking through the site this afternoon, I noticed a bunch of outdated links and pages, and I’m getting a bit tired of the overall look. Time for a redesign? I think so.

Drew pointed out that no springtime trip to Europe would be complete without playing in the (in)famous Italian beach tournament, Paganello. And my mom pointed out that wintertime really is no time to visit central Europe. Both excellent points, and both suggest a late March trip that might look something like this: View Larger Map […]

I’m starting to piece together a European trip for sometime in the relatively near future – perhaps this winter or early spring 2008? On the list include visiting a friend in Munich, a friend in Kosovo, and spending some quality time here. Anything else I should do in that neck of the woods?

After the Craft Day ice cream came out closer to sorbet, Pamala was motivated to do some reading about milk, cream and half & half online; she pointed me to this list of dairy products and their fat content. The blackberry ice cream recipe calls for 2½ cups of heavy cream and 1¼ cups of […]

The Soapbox race on Saturday was a total hoot. We had a couple thousand people come see our car, with maybe 10,000 watching the race. Thanks to Dan for taking some photos, including a slightly out of focus sequence of our spectacular crash. We didn’t win, but we’ll definitely make the highlight reel. We made […]

The ice cream maker made its debut yesterday when I made some cardamom-vanilla ice cream. I modified the recipe a bit, increasing the yield to about a quart. Came out quite well, if a little on the sweet side. I used a little less than a quart of half-and-half, four egg yolks, and about 2/3 […]

Before I got laid off, I put together an entry for the company to compete in the Red Bull Soapbox Race that’s happening in Fremont this weekend. They went ahead and built the car, and we’re racing it on Saturday (I’m part of the skit & helping to push the car). You can see my […]

I bought one of these on eBay last week, and it arrived this morning. I’m looking forward to some tasty experiments!

Shadrach did pretty well at Sectionals over the weekend, holding seed and qualifying for Regionals in just a few weeks. It’s extremely unlikely we’ll win enough games at Regionals to qualify for Nationals, but it’ll be fun to play a lot of high-level teams, and also to watch some exciting games. Three of the top […]

Drew (a Shadrach teammate) has an excellent writeup of our upcoming frisbee weekend over on his site. We had a rough practice last night, but I’m chalking it up to pre-sectionals jitters, and I’m psyched to play this weekend.

I had lunch today with a complete stranger, thanks to Noonhat. I think it’s a great idea in theory, and it’s simple enough that in practice, it works out pretty well. Bruce and I had a great meal at Senor Moose (way less cheesy than the name implies).

The light machine is done, and I’ve put up pictures and video for your entertainment. Check it all out here. I’ve already got ideas for another version (maybe I’ll make one for myself), but I’ve got plenty of other projects (notably, the robot arm) to keep me busy in the meantime.

Many of you know my biggest disappointment with Seattle is the stunning lack of good ice cream (gelato doesn’t count, and neither does Cold Stone). Though I’m a ways away from opening up my own store, a friend and I did make our own ice cream last night – cinnamon pear. It was excellent, and […]

It’s been a little more than two months since the layoff, and a little less than a month since I started looking for work in earnest. I’ve noticed my level of motivation started significantly lower than the last time I was looking for work (two years ago when I moved to Seattle). Fortunately, I’ve found […]

A while back, some friends asked me to take some photos of them for a contest in BUST magazine. They didn’t win, but did make it on the honorable mention page. Congrats Cameron & Rachel!

The beard is back. I don’t know how long it’ll last, but it started on my bike trip to Portland, and so far, I like it.

I went out last night to watch the eclipse, and came home at 3 AM with some photos. My dad’s upcoming 40th college reunion prompted us to work on finishing up the light machine. Look for pictures (and maybe video?) soon.

I’ve been trying to write up my Portland bike trip and include some Google Maps, but seem to have run into a bug in their code. If I map out directions from my house to Portland, selectively add some waypoints, and check the “Avoid Highways” button, I get something awful close to the route I […]

I spent the weekend up in Burlington at Spawnfest. Shadrach did alright – we won our easy games handily, but couldn’t quite squeak out wins against two tough teams, and we came in third. We did so in style, though, as we got our new jerseys and shorts from Five Ultimate. Thanks to them and […]

Sunday night I got back from my Portland trip, content, but legs like jello. I’m planning on writing up my thoughts, but the preview is: I had a great time biking down, hanging out, and playing frisbee, but if I did it again, I’d leave more time to recover before playing at a competitive ultimate […]

Posting from my Palm on the road… So far, so good. Yesterday I made it to Centralia, today, Longview. Tomorrow, Portland!

I’ve been busy, especially so considering I don’t have a job! The frisbee team jerseys are being sorted out, and we’ll likely have something going before Kleinman. Much appreciation & respect to 5 Ultimate for their patience and generosity. I’ve really been enjoying Smith lately – they’ve got great food, good beer, you can hear […]

The frisbee team’s logo/jersey design has evolved over the weekend, into: It’s getting there.

Our new frisbee team, Shadrach, is coming together nicely, and we’re all psyched for our debut at Kleinman in a few weeks. In preparation, we’re making jerseys, and I somehow got put in charge of designing the logo. Here’s what I came up with: I definitely have respect for graphic designers (really designers of any […]

Instead of bringing a digital camera with me on my East Coast trip, I brought the Rolleiflex. Quite a number of the photos turned out well – check ’em out here. I still don’t take quite enough time to make sure the focus is right (especially evident on the color photo of my whole family), […]

It’ll be a few days ’til I get my pictures from the weekend up, but Dan is speedier than I.

As predicted, unemployment isn’t such a bad thing, though I really do miss my job. I sailed four days out of five last week, picnicked on Lake Washington, biked around town and generally enjoyed Seattle. Over the weekend, I went up to Rock Mountain for a spectacular overnight. It never ceases to amaze me how […]

I had started to write a post about my East Coast trip (which was great, btw) earlier this week, but got busy. Then I got laid off. My great little engineering company (well, not mine per se, but it felt that way sometimes), in a very un-great move, laid off 40% of the company in […]

I’m 4 for 4 on having an ice cream each day I’ve been in Boston – lemon espresso, lumpy primate (chunky moneky ripoff) & strawberry rhubarb, lemon burnt caramel, and grapenut (with burnt caramel sauce). It’s early enough in the day today that I’m pretty confident about going 5 for 5.

I was a little worried about my ankle, as it’s been 2 weeks since I stopped running/playing frisbee on it and it wasn’t feeling that much better. But, last night, we had a meeting about creating a second coed team (after a bunch of folks got passed up for Shazam) and ended up tossing a […]

I just got back from watching a rehearsal of my friend Rachel’s performance art group, Helsinki Syndrome – they’re participating in the Northwest New Works Festival at On the Boards. If you’re in town this weekend (I’ll be in Boston), check it out. In the course of setting the stage up before the run-through, the […]

On my way home from work on Friday, I picked up my new bike from the Montlake Bicycle Shop, then yesterday took a nice ride up to Shoreline for the spring league playoffs (just to watch and heckle). So far, I’m enjoying the bike, and even managed not to fall over on my first day […]

I had a great time this past weekend at Bozofest. We ate well, camped, swam, and played a bunch of frisbee in beautiful weather. Montana is pretty spectacular (I’d never been, even on my road trip), even if it’s not particularly close. Unfortunately, a nagging ankle injury I’d been hoping would disappear only got worse […]

Sadly, I didn’t make the frisbee team. It is nice to know, though – six weeks of tryouts is a tad excessive. Plus, it means more free time to work on the robot arm, the condo (the windows need some attention, and I’m thinking about painting the kitchen) and other projects.

If you have a chance, check out Lenin: [Absurdly long subtitle omitted] at the CHAC this month – it’s another excellent show from Annex. I’m headed down to the Maker Faire this weekend for work – it’s a rough job, but someone’s got to do it. (Maybe by next year’s the robot arm will be […]

I’m still in the running in the Shazam Returns tryouts. They’re tons of fun, but really take a lot of both mental and physical energy, so I haven’t been doing that much else besides. I did bake some excellent biscotti last week (honey and pistachio), and snuck in a viewing of Volver over the weekend […]

I had lunch Sunday at the Volunteer Park Cafe, and would highly recommend it. The food was great, and it was a really pleasant place to spend time reading the New Yorker and watching people. I updated the robot arm page with progress of late. The PCB is nearly ready to be fabricated, and then […]

I really don’t like mayonnaise at all, although I can tolerate it on certain occassions in small amounts. However, I have spots reserved in hell for each and every restaurant that puts mayonnaise on sandwiches/burgers/etc. without listing it on the menu. And there are extra-special spots for those who list mayo only on some menu […]

For the first time in over a month, I didn’t have frisbee games both days this weekend. The first round of Shazam tryouts ended on Saturday with a mini-tournament (cuts happen tomorrow), but our Sunday spring league game got postponed, so I had a free day. After picking up a new toy, I made some […]

It’s too bad they can’t extend their run, ’cause Tuesday was excellent. It really was so much more than $10, down-the-street theater, but it was still $10 and down the street from my apartment. Go Annex!

I meant to post this last week… Recently, I got to play with one of these and see one of these. Both fun toys that I likely won’t ever own, but both confirm that we’re still making technological progress. Last Tuesday night I saw My Name is Rachel Corrie, which confirms we’re really not making […]

I’m back from California, rested and tan. I had a lovely time visiting folks in the Bay Area on Friday, Sunday & Monday, and the frisbee tournament was good times as well. For the first time in a while, I left my laptop (and any other device that could be used to check email) at […]

If you’re in the Seattle area this Thursday, be sure to check out Ignite Seattle – a growing gathering of science (and other) nerds. The last one was plenty entertaining; I’d expect no less of tomorrow’s event.

I’ve been doing a bit of work on the robot arm. Lately, I’ve been trying to finish the schematic, after which I’ll start board layout. It’s still a ways off, but I’m starting to get excited about having a functioning robot arm. It’s been a frisbee-ful spring so far – I’m playing the Spring Team […]

300 was as bad as I expected, but Wizard People, Dear Reader was way better than expected – it’s an alternate soundtrack to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by Brad Neely, the guy who told us all about George Washington. Tavolata was excellent, as expected. The Pi(e) Party (pictures soon) was even bigger and […]

Yesterday’s Slog in the Bog lived up to its name as it rained (and winds consistently blew at 15-20 mph) the whole day. Given the four games I played in the weather yesterday, I wasn’t really up for another, so I skipped out on my spring league game and opted for brunch instead. Highly recommended […]

I spent the better portion of the day today making croissants (from scratch), and the remaining portion of the day eating them. It was a rough Sunday. This recipe came out pretty well. Not perfectly, mind you, but pretty well. They could have used a little more of a sheen to them, and maybe have […]

In spite of the fact that there are a couple of errors in the first paragraph, you should read this article in the NY Times about privacy and the government, and not just because my father is featured heavily. It calls in to question requiring all Department of Education contractors to submit not only to […]

I had a great experience on Friday at Elliott Bay Bikes down near the Market when the bottom bracket on my bike finally gave out. They let me use their shop & tools, and talked me through removing the old BB and installing the new, and then only charged me for the parts. Nice folks […]

In early January I hosted a Craft Day, at which a friend made some props for Annex Theatre’s current offering, Small Town. When I saw the show on Tuesday (you should go, too – it’s running through the 21st of February), I was delighted to see craft day got a shout-out in the program. It’s […]

On Friday, the sofa arrived. I think it looks great, but you can judge for yourself here. Time to make some throw pillows.

I’ve had a chance to check out a few of the nicer local restaurants recently, and enjoyed them thoroughly. Lark was everything it talked up to be: a beautiful venue with spectacular food. Especially good was the yellowtail carpaccio, as well as the farro with mascarpone and squash, among some other great dishes including my […]

It’s been quite some time since I noticed that the mileage my hybrid’s MPG gauge reported was about 5% higher than what I calculated using the trip odometer and the volume of gas off the pump. In today’s mail, I received notice of a class-action lawsuit against Honda, claiming the odometer on all Hondas sold […]

I’ve been looking at furniture recently, in search of the sofa for my living room. I quite liked several of the Bensen designs, but can’t quite stomach the $5K price tags. I think I’ve settled on this couch (in “Sage”) from Design Within Reach, which is somewhat reasonably priced (making it unlike many things at […]

I finally had a chance to do a new model of my place in Sketchup, this time to scale – check it out here. I also spent the afternoon replacing a broken window sash cord with copper chain in my bedroom. Pictures soon, but the summary is that it worked, and looks pretty decent. I […]

McMaster-Carr never ceases to amaze me. I’ve been calling around Seattle and scouring the internet the past couple days looking for sash chain, but didn’t find anyone who sold it for a reasonable price. Lo and behold, McMaster does, and it’ll be here tomorrow. What would I do without them?

We were lucky enough at work today to have Trimpin join us for lunch. His studio is just down the street, but we’d never met him ’til today – what a fascinating and impressive guy. Sometime, I’d love to get to Phaeno and check out his sculpture there.

We had our holiday/solstice/anniversary party at work last night, replete with many drinks and outrageously dressed engineers. A bunch of us decided to mark the occassion with a mustache of one form or another. Here’s mine, started only a week and a half ago but soon to be shaved:

Recently I went to see Joanna Newsom at the Showbox, but only after about two weeks of waffling. Each time I convinced myself I wasn’t going to like the show, I read another article about how amazing her new album is and what a great performer she is. You know what? They were all right. […]

The season of holiday parties is upon us. Let the eggnog consumption begin! A former crafter from Somerville moved out to California to seek his fortune and start a company. The result? Fluther. Ask a question, a real person will answer it (a la Wikipedia).

As some friends were leaving my place after dinner tonight around midnight, they called back up to let me know about the awesome light show in the courtyard in front of the building: Pretty spectacular.

Thankfully, travel to Pittsburgh on Saturday was much smoother than my flights earlier last week, and I’m enjoying my time here so far. It’s great to see Matt and some old friends, and also check out a new city. There’ll be a full-fledged Craft Day on Sunday – drop a line if you’ll be in […]

I had a whirlwind trip to Rochester, NY for work yesterday and today, and it will go down in my personal history as some of the least pleasant travel ever. Yesterday, we flew through Newark (a.k.a. the seventh ring of hell). We did ultimately make it to Rochester, though, but not before spending two hours […]

A few of us started up the West Coast edition of Craft Day this afternoon. I’m looking forward to more crafting in the coming months, especially as the weather gets worse in Seattle, and also to making more progress on the now 6 year sweater. Good thing it’s for me and that I haven’t gained […]

Rif and Anna sent me an awesome shirt in the mail over the weekend. I’m wearing it today as it expresses my satisfaction with last night’s election results:

Got news today of a high school classmate’s four month, 6,500+ mile bike trip across the US – makes my road trip seem downright wussy. Check it out at Bike America 2006. I also got to check out a Sony eBook Reader today. It may be the future, but they need a little design help […]

It’s that time again. I speak, of course, not just about the election, but about obsessively checking Electoral-vote.com hourly for updates on the election. Things are looking pretty alright at the moment, but it’ll be a tense day tomorrow. And, of course, don’t forget to vote. In other news, I’m rejoining the modern age this […]

Finally got a chance to post pictures from my California trip – check ’em out here.

I saw Al Gore on Tuesday in Seattle, and was pleasantly surprised. On the subject of the environment, he’s enthusiastic, well-informed and overall an extremely effective speaker with an impressive set of data to support his points. If you haven’t already, check out Climate Crisis for all sorts of info on how to reduce the […]

I’m back from California, and quite enjoying the fall weather (and foliage) in Seattle. More to come, and pictures soon, too.

I’m halfway through my California vacation, and enjoying it thoroughly. Last week was largely spent visiting friends and eating my way around the Bay Area, and I was in Yosemite for the weekend. Cold, but breathtaking: Many more pictures to come.

I posted an update on the robot arm page – got the motors working with the new processor – at a very appropriate time. I’m on vacation now (woohoo!) in California, visiting my old roommate Laura, who graciously drove me down to Northeastern University four years ago (almost to the day) to pick it up […]

Had fun this weekend – saw Jet Li’s Fearless with ninja-suit-wearing coworkers Friday night, then went rafting with other (non-ninja-suit-wearing) coworkers Saturday, and topped it off with a good bit of time spent outside on the beautiful fall day that was yesterday.

I’m starting to get excited about my upcoming vacation: first a visit to the Bay Area, then some backpacking in Yosemite, where I’ve never been. Looking forward to some ice cream and visiting a friend at his new job. Any other recommendations? If you’re in the Seattle area in the next few weeks, go check […]

As I was perusing the Seattle Weekly, I misread an ad for “cosmetic laser surgery” as “cosmic laser surgery.” I could use some of that, I think. A while back, Tova turned me on to Vik Muniz. Looks like the SAM will be showing his art soon (also courtesy of the Seattle Weekly).

Pictures from the weekend are up.

Took a weekend backpacking trip up to Snow Lake – amazing how close to the city such a beautiful place is. It’s only a 45 minute drive up to Snoqualmie Pass, and 4 and a half miles in, you’re completely on your own. Pictures soon. Started work again on the robot arm, replacing the PIC […]

My cultural experiences from last week covered quite a range: Thursday, I went to the Henry at UW to see the Maya Lin exhibit “Systematic Landscapes”; Saturday, I saw Jesus is Magic. Both were excellent. I have but one box remaining in my living room, which will be unpacked when I find a little more […]

Played this weekend at Spawnfest up in Burlington. Highlights included good weather, swimming in the Skagit, excellent bagels and good frisbee. I did get clobbered on Saturday, so I didn’t play Sunday, but that didn’t stop me from hanging out, eating more bagels, swimming & heckling. The condo is coming along and feeling more and […]

Got a bunch of stuff done around the condo this weekend – fixed a leaky toilet valve, installed doorstops, unpacked some more, and painted the living room ceiling. Plenty still left to do, though. Also, I took a few pictures of the place (though they’re not the best), and put them up here.

As of today, I’ve lived in Seattle officially for 1 year and 1 week. Though I don’t feel particularly settled right this second, that has much more to do with my recent move than any unhappiness in the city. I’ve really been enjoying myself here: found a great job, taken advantage of the surroundings, bought […]

On the front of the juice bottle: “100% Juice”. The ingredients list: “Filtered water, white grape juice concentrate, ruby red grapefruit juice concentrate, apple juice concentrate, pectin, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), carmine (color), citric acid and other natural flavor.” What gives?

Yesterday, I moved in to my new place! Well, I should qualify: Jed & Renee and Jared & Chika, all of whom have earned a spot in my hall of fame for their heroic moving efforts, helped me move in yesterday. Pictures coming soon.

It’s official – I now own a condo! The place is in great shape, but it does need some painting, which I’m hoping to get done in time to move this coming weekend. My coworkers have raved about low VOC paints (they don’t smell bad at all) from Best Paint – report coming soon. Friday […]

Finally, pictures! First, the East Coast Trip (Sharon, Boston, Portland). Then, the Fourth of July. Yeah, trying out Flickr again – easier to upload and rename pics. Condo purchase is as close to finalized as it can be without having actually closed on the place – that happens Thursday. Let the painting & moving begin!

Haven’t had a chance yet to put up pics from the trip, or from the fireworks last week, but here’s a teaser: And, just for Rounds: Lastly, proof that there is a 14,400 foot mountain very close to Seattle:

Awful busy these days, but mostly with fun stuff. Hoping to post pictures soon from my East Coast trip as well as 4th of July fireworks, as well as some condo info and photos. Maybe this weekend?

I got back last night from a week of vacation on the East Coast, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Highlights included: a trip to The Village Oven, a great pizza place in West Stockbridge (no website and no reviews, hmm) lots of ice cream watching plenty of World Cup seeing a bunch of friends and family […]

Well, my offer on the condo was accepted tonight! It’s far from a done deal, but it’s a big step closer. I’m simultaneously relieved to find out (I can be patient, but in general, I’m not a patient person), excited about the place itself, and nervous about the future. More details to follow.

Saw a condo I liked this afternoon and took some time this evening to play with Sketchup and make a model. Check it out: Might be putting in an offer this weekend.

Oh happy day – Sketchup is now available (free) for the Mac. It’s also a happy day ’cause I managed to rid myself of a nasty headache last night and sleep for a blissful 9 hours straight. Often when I get headaches, I can attribute them to stress, dehydration, lack of sleep or (sometimes) mild […]

On Jared & Chika’s recommendation, I tried the Korean place, Kim Chi Bistro, in “The Alley” on Broadway in Capitol Hill – pretty damn tasty bi bim bop, nice owner(s), reasonable prices, and it’s decidedly closer than Hae-Nam Kalbi (which I still enjoy, and visited for a second time recently). Good, local bi bim bap […]
