Just found: Stitch ‘n’ Pitch. I’m gonna wear my new shirt.

It’s been a while since I ranted political here, but it seems to be time: If you’re looking to be throroughly depressed with a retrospective on just how likely it is that the 2004 election results are less than legitimate, read this piece by Robert Kennedy. Combined, common sense, an older article analzying the cost […]

Saw a great shirt in the coffee shop this morning: “Man enough to knit, strong enough to purl.” Check out Men Knit and the associated CafePress store.

I accidentally left my shaving kit in New York a couple weeks ago, and it took a while for it to make its way back to me. In the meantime, I shaved, but not with a brush and soap. It’s just not the same… I’ve got a real love/hate thing going with the Sierra Club. […]

Had a great trip last night to Sambar in Ballard, which included a fantastic new cocktail: whisky or bourbon (can’t remember), vanilla infused simple syrup, and lime juice. Simple and very tasty. The Weepies were great on Wednesday night – left me looking forward to Peter Mulvey at the Tractor in a couple weeks.

Well, I ended up putting an offer in on a condo yesterday, but quickly learned I didn’t get it. There were nine other offers, and the place went for 10% over the asking price – yikes! Back to the search. Lots going on this week – check out The Weepies tonight at the Tractor Tavern […]

Had a nice time Saturday at the Ballard Art Walk, though the bike ride back up Capitol Hill around 11 PM was a little rough. Shouldn’t have had that extra piece of pizza. I’ve been spending lots of time lately on Redfin looking at condos in Seattle. Came close to putting an offer on one […]

It’s been a busy week since I got back from New York. I did get around to having my film from the trip developed, though, and there are some nice images. More when I have a chance to scan them, but to start you off, here’s the first – my grandfather in his apartment. I’m […]

My friend Mike helped me build up a fixed-gear rear-wheel last night. My ride in to work is brief (less than 2 miles), so I thought this would be a good way to get more exercise out of such a short distance – only one speed and no way to coast means plenty of pedaling. […]

I got an amazing note from a fellow photographer recently regarding the Rolleiflex – check it out here. Amazing not just because it’s good info, but also because it was completely unsolicited – thanks Mike!

Though I can’t use it at home (still no Mac version), I’m a Picasa convert. I used it to export a slew of climbing pictures this afternoon at work – took no time at all! So much better than the iPhoto workflow. So when’s the Mac version coming out? Speaking of climbing photos, they’re up. […]

Unfortunately, this weekend, I broke my streak of 12 years being vomit-free. There was some kind of stomach bug going around work Friday, so Friday night and Saturday were not so pleasant for me. But thankfully, Sunday was a great day. I took off pretty early for Leavenworth and did a fair bit of climbing […]

In an effort to help my dad with a video project, I unearthed my video camera from the closet, only to find it reporting an error code when I put a tape in. I had a great time taking it apart down to the circuit boards, but was unable to fix the problem. Some googling […]

Spent some time out on the Olympic Peninsula this weekend, first on the coast, then at the Sol Duc Hot Springs – not bad! Check out some pictures here. I’ve been back to Vios a couple times now, and each time I feel compelled to get the galaktoboureko, an amazing dessert made from phyllo dough […]

Off to Virginia this afternoon for work. Last weekend’s Boston visit, today’s trip, and a trip to New York at the end of the month will make for 3 cross-country round-trip flights in a month. Too many for me!

As usual, I’ve been a busy guy. Some highlights from the past week include a great meal at Vios, a fun trip to Boston for my folks 60th birthdays, and an excellent concert at The Showbox (Beth Orton and Willy Mason). I was glad to see a whole slew of folks back in Boston, and […]

Spring has sprung here in Seattle, and I’ve already started taking advantage of the beautiful weather. Frisbee started yesterday – though we didn’t win, it’s great to be playing with the Rain Dogs folks again. Somehow, I thought it wouldn’t be too detrimental to play disc before participating in the Big Climb (a fundraiser for […]

Yesterday was, among other things, Pi Day and my birthday. The Pi(e) Party on Saturday was a great time – thanks to Matt for the pictures and Jared & Chika for hosting. I don’t usually expect my birthday to be much different from any other day, but yesterday was a very pleasant exception. I got […]

I don’t often make New Year’s resolutions, but I sort of made one this year – I wanted to finish some projects that’ve been going on forever, notably, the robot arm (3 and a half years and counting) and a sweater (7 years plus). It was a lofty goal, but at first I thought I […]

My grandmother Marjorie died last night. She was a pretty amazing lady: well-known hematologist, author and editor, birder and naturalist, accomplished musician, cancer survivor, mother of four, and grandmother of eight. A couple good stories about her: Though it was before I was born, my parents tell of when there was a groundhog nosing around […]

A couple weeks ago, I picked up a Palm T|X to replace my old Vx. I’ve really been enjoying the new one – it’s got a nice color screen, built-in wi-fi and Bluetooth (so nice not to have to plug this thing in to synchronize it), and quite reasonable battery life (not quite as good […]

Anyone wanting to be more depressed about the Bust administration and the inhumane treatment of foreign detainees should take a look at this New Yorker article. Actually, pretty much everyone ought to read it. You can also listen to an interview with the author of the article here.

Although my favorite vegetarian asian restaurant, Wholesome Vegetasia, closed, an excellent vegetarian dim sum restaurant, Vegetarian Bistro, opened in its place. I went yesterday – definitely try the fried mashed potatoes and egg custard I also found a great Korean place north of the city on Aurora. I set out to find a restaurant I’d […]

I got my LMD18200 working last night, and can now successfully control a DC motor from the PIC. No PID controller yet, but it’s not far off. Pretty soon I’ll be ready to fire up a motor in place and bring the arm to life. Towards that goal, I’m continuing my foray into the world […]

Two weeks ago, I ended up working the whole weekend, and not shaving for a couple days. I figured it was the perfect time to experiment with a beard – something I hadn’t ever done, unless you count the adolescent crap everyone tries where it looks like you’ve just got some dirt on your chin. […]

Turns out, after much fussing and attempted debugging, the reason I couldn’t get I2C working with my PIC was due to a compiler bug. I can’t complain too much, since I’m using the free version of the software, but still, it’s a bummer to spend days working on a problem only to find out it’s […]

More progress on the robot arm – I got my PIC 16F690 communicating with my PC via I2C. Should’ve been a lot easier, but at least it’s going now. Next step is to interface the motor driver chip with the PIC. I played in my first Co-Rec soccer game last night and had a good […]

The kobe beef at the FareStart dinner last week was super-tasty. It’s my plan to eat more organic meat, and eat less meat overall. I certainly can’t afford kobe beef all the time, but it seems worth it to get good stuff, especially when I have a choice. I’ve been thinking a bit about upgrading […]

In an attempt to recreate some cookies my brother made a few years ago, I scoured the web looking for orange polenta biscuits. The recipe he used was from a Jamie Oliver cookbook (this seems to be it), and the quantities are all by weight. I ended up fudging things a bit, but the cookies […]

I’ve been busy lately. Managed to get out this weekend for a couple frisbee games during a sunny interval, made some tasty pizza, and worked some on the robot arm. My parents are headed in to Seattle at the end of the week, and I’m looking forward to showing them the town, eating well, and […]

I went out dancing last night for the first time in a while, and enjoyed it more than I have of late. Glad to hear Solomon’s trio again and dance with some new folks. Lunch today was from the Baguette Box on Pine, and boy was it tasty. The lemongrass beef sandwich was my favorite […]

The weather’s taken a turn for the colder in the mountains, so I’m off to do some snowboarding tomorrow & Friday. I’ve only snowboarded once before, and my memory is that I had fun, but my tailbone hurt a surprising amount after a day on the slopes. I’m taking a lesson or two this week, […]

I’ve got some time off work, so I’ve been working more on PIC programming, and have now figured out all the basic issues – I can program a chip from my Mac (see here for details). I was hoping to do some skiing this week, but the weather isn’t cooperating at all – it’s 50 […]

I’m making more progress towards being able to program PICs from my Mac – check out the latest update here.

Tova and Scott have a joint show called “Doin’ Lines with Scott and Tova” up at True Grounds in Ball Square in Somerville – there’s a reception this Saturday at 5 PM. Check it out if you’re in that ‘hood (I sadly no longer am). I picked up a copy of Tiger last night and […]

I’m making progress towards being able to program a PIC microcontroller with my Mac, as you can read about on the robot arm page. It’s been a little frustrating, but I’m close. I had some fantastic sushi tonight at Chiso. I’m not sure if it topped Kirala overall, but it came close, and the unagi […]

For the first time in my life, I sang a song at a karaoke bar last night. And it wasn’t even horrible, I think (I really don’t sing too well, so it coulda been real bad). It was Jeff’s birthday, and he said what he wanted for his birthday was for me to sing. How […]

I had an entirely enjoyable day visiting with Rif in Vancouver yesterday, in spite of the snow. The border crossing coming back took a little longer than I wanted, but I’ll definitely head back up there sometime for a longer visit. It’s really only 2 and a half hours away. I’m about to order a […]

Jared & Chika came over for dinner tonight, and Chika delivered my new, custom messenger bag that she’d made: I’m off to Vancouver tomorrow morning for the day to meet Rif and show off the new bag.

I spent Thanksgiving in Seattle with friends rather than in New York with family, but it was nice none the less. I made a couple ducks instead of a turkey, which went over well, and there was plenty of food to go ’round. Thanks to Andy & Ying for hosting. I played in a frisbee […]

I’m heading back to Seattle tomorrow morning, having really enjoyed my time in the Bay Area. Highlights include cooking a feast with Laura (the fusilli carbonara with fresh herbs and bay leaf creme brulee from The Herb Farm Cookbook were excellent), the fourth Harry Potter movie, a great bike ride into the Oakland hills, dinner […]

I’m off to San Francisco/Oakland/Berkeley today for the weekend – a last-minute mini-vacation before I start work after Thanksgiving. Thanks to Alaska Air for the $120 round-trip ticket.

A friend and I ate at Crave this week. In contrast to some reports I’d read, we found the service to be excellent, and agreed with other reviewers that the food was spot on. We enjoyed a dish of mussels cooked in coconut milk & spices to start, and I had a braised lamb shank […]

I had a good trip back to Boston this weekend, albeit a brief one. I flew in Friday, left Saturday morning for the wedding in Western Mass., and flew back on Monday afternoon. Unexpectedly, it was 65 and sunny on Saturday afternoon, so they had the ceremony outdoors. In November! In the Berkshires! With the […]

I’m headed back to Boston this weekend for a wedding (congrats Kate & Chris), but I’ll only be around for a little while. Apologies in advance for the folks I won’t get a chance to visit with…

Made an excellent dinner tonight based on goodies from the Broadway Farmer’s Market: beet risotto from Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone (made with golden beets), salad, and vanilla ice cream with a sauce of baby kiwis. I’d never seen the baby kiwi fruits before, but they’re quite excellent. They’re about the size of a large grape, […]

Many people have heard the phrase “like watching paint dry,” but today I actually watched paint dry. Not surprisingly, it wasn’t much fun. But, getting paid to do it made it a little more bearable.

It’s a slow week on the job, so I’ve been doing some work on unfinished projects. Since I lugged the damn thing out to Seattle, I feel somewhat obligated to put some effort in to getting the robot arm up and running. I’ve been reading a bunch about PIC microcontrollers and motor encoders, and once […]

I’ve been doing some woodworking lately (making some drawer dividers for Matt) and have a much better understanding of the phrase “necessity is the mother of invention.” As you can imagine, a carpeted studio apartment isn’t the best venue for sawing, carving and otherwise creating woodchips. I’ve fashioned a workbench of sorts from a 2×8, […]

I forgot to write about Rif & Anna and my experiment performed during my trip to Boston. Having recently read Blink, in which Malcolm Gladwell writes of the Pepsi Challenge, we decided to test ourselves and see if we could tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi without looking. The short summary is this: it’s […]

I really took advantage of my new neighborhood this weekend. I visited three out of the four used CD stores in search of a gift, went to the farmer’s market today (bunch o’ beets for a buck!), walked to the top of the lookout tower in Volunteer park, and had some great coffee. I’ve dealt […]

I’m happy to say that both Door-to-Door and anyone snooping around while I was packing or unpacking have been cleared of any wrongdoing. I discovered the missing box in the basement of my old apartment, and am now enjoying my stereo in Seattle. Considering it was the thing I was looking forward to having most […]

My stuff arrived in the Door-to-Door container today on schedule, and it took a lot less time to unload than it did to load everything. All the breakables seem to have survived, a testament either to my packing job or their careful driving (or both), and almost everything else is here. I say almost ’cause […]

Though I tend not to watch a lot of TV, I’ve noticed that since I’m living without one, I do occassionally want to veg out. I’ve been reading, drawing & getting out more since I moved in to my new place, but sometimes zoning out and choosing not to exercise my mind is exactly what […]

Well, it’s been quite a weekend for me already, and it’s only Sunday morning. Friday night I ended up at an animal-themed burlesque show in Seattle, followed by a visit to a bar that the Seattle Weekly described thusly: “the ramshackle décor is like a seedy literary salon, a Faulkner novel, and an opium den […]

Something not unexpected: moving isn’t fun at all. Something unexpected: I was invited to a goat roast on Saturday night.

So far, my experience with Door-to-Door moving has been exceptional – they communicate well, arrive on time, and deliver what they promise. Can’t ask for more than that… well, if they offered me fresh baked cookies, I’d be even happier. Fresh baked cookies were the only highlight of my red-eye flight to Boston last week […]

I’m headed back to Boston tonight (woo! red eye!) to collect all the stuff that’ll fit in my new apartment. Unfortunately, the lathe, table saw, and much of the craft room fall into the “won’t fit” category. Can we have a moment of silence for them? Thanks.

Highly recommended is the tasty vegetarian Chinese food in the International District at Vegetasia. I’m not often a big fan of fake meat, but they do it well – try the “kung pao chicken” (which is nothing like kung pao chicken, but it’s good), eggplant, and green beans. I’m almost done reading Zen and the […]

Check out the view from the roofdeck of my new building: Among other things, I can see the Space Needle, downtown Seattle, Puget Sound, and the Olympic Mountains. And you should see it at sunset!

I posted the last of my roadtrip pictures on the roadtrip page – new ones include photos from Portland, the Bay Area, and Crater Lake. I’m keeping my fingers crossed, but it looks like I’ve found an apartment in Seattle (the first place I found fell through when they discovered I wasn’t yet employed). It’ll […]

On my way down to California, I stopped in Portland where, among other things, I visited Kagen’s studio. He makes some awfully impressive wooden puzzle boxes – check ’em out. After a stop at Crater Lake on the way up, I’m back in Seattle, looking for a job and an apartment. Unfortunately, those who manage […]

I still don’t remember about the weather here in the Bay Area – I headed up to San Francisco from Palo Alto this afternoon and didn’t think about outerwear since it was 85° and sunny on the peninsula. When I got to my (outdoor) concert, it was foggy and 60. I’ll learn. I saw War […]

I put up some pictures from my hike this past weekend in the North Cascades – check ’em out here (part of the roadtrip section). Pretty amazing place. I made it down to Palo Alto this afternoon after two nights in Portland and a quick stop in Brownsville, CA. I had my first tangle with […]

I had a great time this past weekend playing at Potlatch – you can check out a few pictures here. I also had a chance to put up the remaining roadtrip pictures from Boise – those are up on the roadtrip page. I sent a few choice pictures from the summer off to CostCo (which […]

I had a chance to go through some of the (many) pictures from South Dakota and Wyoming, and I posted a bunch on the roadtrip page.

I’ve arrived in Seattle. Hard to believe I’d been on the road for a full month, but it’s true. I updated the map, but haven’t had a chance to post any more pictures. Soon. Some interesting (?) statistics about my road trip: Maximum speed: a wimpy 90 mph, but not bad for a hybrid Minimum […]

This week, I joined the 700 club. No, not the Pat Robertson organization… my hybrid went over 700 miles on a single tank of gas. Amazing. I’m a day away from Seattle, and really looking forward to being in the same place for more than a day or two.

I’m posting from the lovely Hard Drive Cafe in Jackson, WY – they’re nice folks, have good coffee and have free wireless. What more could you want? I’m on my way Boise, which is my last stop before Seattle – hard to believe I’ve been on the road for almost a month. So far, I’ve […]

Just a quick note from Cody, WY to say I’m alive and well.

As you can see in the latest update, I opted for the french fries cooked in duck fat (at Hot Doug’s) on my way out of Chicago. Best. Fries. Ever. For the past couple days, I’ve been in Madison (pictures coming soon), thoroughly enjoying my proximity to the lake, the farmer’s market, and my first […]

As I rolled in to Chicago yesterday, I was greeted by humid, near-ninety degree weather. I did what any self-respecting unemployed guy would do – I went to the beach. Lake Michigan was about as cold as the Atlantic, but quite refreshing. Tomorrow’s culinary adventure: Italian Beef or french fries fried in duck fat (or […]

After consuming a sizeable sandwich for lunch and many grilled things for dinner, I’m all caught up on calories after the frisbee tournament this weekend. I’m a little sunburned and still a bit sore, but I had a great time in Fergus, Ontario. And I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy just saying […]

I’m in Ithaca, NY. I wouldn’t say I’m overwhelmed by the driving so far, but it feels like I should be further along than the map shows. Partly that’s because I did some extra driving on Tuesday to visit MassMoCA only to find them closed Tuesdays. Next time, I’ll call. I posted some pictures from […]

I made it out of Boston (and only left a little bit of a mess for my roommates to deal with) on Saturday. Look for an update in a day or two – in the meantime I’m hanging out, relaxing, and enjoying the lack of rain in northwestern Connecticut.

Well, I’m heading westward in just two (!) days. Fortunately, I have a brother who’s a cartographer – I’ll never be lost. I forgot how much of a hassle packing up is. I had imagined my last weeks as a bucolic, work-free time, but the reality of boxes has taken over. There are boxes everywhere. […]

Ack! I’m moving out in four days! How’d that happen so soon?

Caleb and I were discussing whether or not you can bet on the weather. The forecast earlier in the week predicted no rain on Saturday, which also happens to be the BUDA spring league tournament. We thought we could cut our losses by betting on rain, since it always turns out to be a crappy […]

It was a warbler-ful day at Mt. Auburn Cemetery – I saw magnolia, parula, black and white, black-throated blue, yellow-throated, and black-throated green warblers. I also saw an ovenbird, oriole, hermit thrush, veery, and a heron. Check out a couple pictures here.

I got the latest alumni magazine from my college recently, and as I was thumbing through the Class Notes section, I came across this gem: [Name witheld] is training to compete in the 2006 Ultimate Fighting Championships. When not training, [name] writes a bimonthly column for the midwest regional newletter (the Beef ‘n’ Chatter) of […]

I finished the USB storage device project and put up a couple more pictures – check ’em out here. It’s a tiny bit bigger than I’d like, but I like how different it looks. I also installed the auxilliary audio input in my car this morning. All went smoothly, and I didn’t even have to […]

It’s been a nature-y week for me – Mt. Auburn yesterday and Great Meadows NWR this morning (early!). Check out the pics. I was psyched to finally find an approachable wood duck, and the grosbeak was a surprise at the end of our walk around the lower pool (it was so windy, we’d pretty much […]

I had a good visit at the Mt. Auburn Cemetery this afternoon and got some good bird/nature shots. Check ’em out here.

Well, it looks like I’m not gonna have a chance to hold a last Craft Day before I leave town. Thanks so much to everyone for all the great Craft Days passed, and look for announcements of CD-WC (that’s Craft Day – West Coast) in a few months.

I started a new project yesterday to turn a cheap flash-based MP3 player (a gift I received) into a unique USB storage device. Your input is requested. It didn’t take long to think of a few more things to add to my “to-do before leaving Boston” list: one more visit to the MIT Museum a […]

It’s my last day of work today. Next is three weeks of packing up and finishing up in Boston, then I hit the road for two months of vacation – not bad! There are a few things I’d like to do before I leave town, notably: go to Chez Henri one last time have one […]

I finished scanning in a roll of 120 size film from the Rolleiflex last night – there’s a picture from New York and a couple from the Somerville Open Studios opening reception a few weeks back. Check ’em out here.

I was disappointed the other day to find that O Cantinho had replaced their amazing (and cheap) sandwiches and appetizers with a full-blown dinner menu. They still offer the sandwiches and stuff for lunch, but it’s all real entrees at dinner time. Aside from changing the menu, they spruced the place up in an attempt […]

In the rest of the world, May 1st is Labor Day, however in the US, it’s Law Day. In 2002, President Bush released this proclamation about Law Day, saying, among other things: “Our forefathers imagined a well-qualified judiciary put in place through a dynamic and constructive interaction between the executive and legislative branches of Government. […]

Be sure to check out all the art this weekend at the Somerville Open Studios, especially Tova’s art and Dan’s photographs at Maven Realty in Davis Square. I was introduced to a great game last night – Blockus. It’s one of those simple-to-explain games that turns out to be really fun to play and difficult […]

Dan and I went to Great Meadows again this morning. Though we stalked them for the better part of an hour, we never really got a good chance at taking pictures of the wood ducks that are hanging out there now. I did get a couple decent shots though – check ’em out here.

I’m never eating again. I ate more than anyone ought to consume this weekend, and while it was all great food, the thought of a meal right now makes me ill. One of the desserts that contributed to my over-full state was this apple confit. Divine. Other items from the various weekend menus: New York […]

I put up some of the images from yesterday’s Great Meadows trip (and a couple from a photo outing a week or so ago) – check ’em out here

Check out the hot press Tova’s been getting lately. Also check out her soon-to-be-launched website (well done, Anna).

I made a bunch of progress on the light machine recently including designing in the ball bearings, installing the two motors, and locating weldable cellophane. Should be up and running in not too long. This morning I met Dan at Concord Great Meadows for some wildlife photography. We saw red-winged blackbird (by the hundreds), Canada […]

An ad in last week’s New Yorker (the Travel issue) noted that Texas contained more art than The Louvre. Well, duh! At about 550,000 square feet, the Louvre is an impressive 2% of a square mile. Even with considerable offsite storage, it doesn’t rival the 268,601 square miles that comprise Texas. There are plenty of […]

I did some experimenting with basic lighting for portraits over the weekend with my dad. Though we didn’t take a lot of pictures we did figure out it’s possible to get decent lighting for a simple portrait with inexpensive lights (think 100W bulbs). Definitely a lens with a larger aperture (like this one, which I’ve […]

I’m continuing to whittle down my collection of stuff – currently up for sale on Craigslist is my old 35mm SLR.

I finally got a chance to check out Metro Rock Gym last night. It’d been almost two years since I’d climbed, and I’m a little surprised I’m not more sore this morning. I enjoyed it a lot, though, and found Metro to be much better than Boston Rock Gym in many respects – it seems […]

I went for a nature walk around Arlington Great Meadows this afternoon and took the D70 with me. You can check out a couple of pics here. I had a good time, but I was a little disappointed with the performance of the 70-300mm lens – there’s quite a lot of chromatic abberation (purple fringes […]
