After a week-long trip to the East Coast, I’m happily (if only briefly) home in Seattle. From Boston, where I spent some time with family & friends, I flew down to Maryland for a second shot at New Year’s with Drew and friends. Last year, I spent my 3 days in Lexington Park shuffling between […]

Drew is leaving Seattle in a week. Really? Really. He has been my best friend here for the past few years. He’s been a confidant, a social connector, and a partner in shennanigans, experiments of all sorts, appreciating good food and drink, ultimate frisbee, trips and expeditions, and conversation, among many other things. And though […]

Lately I’ve been taking a fair number of pictures with my iPhone camera, and have been looking for a better way to share them. The photo of the arboretum in full fall foliage stood on its own, but most seem to go better as part of a set. Here’s giving the Flash/embedded Picasa Web slideshow […]

I find myself once again away from home, this time back in Taiwan after almost exactly a year of work travel exclusively to China. For a number of reasons, I’ve enjoyed the Taipei visits a great deal more than the Dongguan/Shenzhen trips, and this one is no exception. It happened that our supplier was having […]

How’s the saying go? International travel heals all wounds? No, that’s not it, but I’m going to Taiwan tomorrow just the same. Though I’m not exactly thrilled with the timing of the trip, I am looking forward to catching up with an old friend, seeing more of Taipei (last year’s trip was all of three […]

Almost every day, I travel about 12 miles each way to and from work. Neither do I particularly treasure time spent in transit, nor do I get excited about the environmental impact of my commute. But both are mitigated by making the trip with others (go vanpool!), and we’re lucky enough that the trip takes […]

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about a lot of things (how’s that for vague), and while they aren’t really what I like to talk about in this forum, I will say that it feels like I’m on the cusp of seeing (positive) changes in my behavior based on that thinking. Being more intentional about […]

I’ve got a longer piece of writing brewing in the editor and in my mind, but for the time being, you can check out some photos of my recent travels. First up, a trip to the Bay Area for Laura & Alex’s wedding. Photos here. Second, a longer trip to the East Coast for Abby […]

After a week on the East Coast, I’m back home in Seattle. It was a very up-and-down trip, during which I celebrated a friend’s wedding, and also my grandparents’ lives, saw lots of friends and family, and spent a whole lot of time in transit from one place to another. In my planning, I somehow […]

A short list of things I’m happy about, in no particular order: friends in Seattle friends visiting from San Francisco and New York friends getting married to people they should be getting married to friends, in general fresh, local food — salmon, homegrown vegetables, happy lamb, blackberries from the side of the road playing ultimate, […]

Although I used to go quite often (at times, several nights a week), I don’t swing dance much these days. After 5 years in the Boston scene as a dancer and sometimes organizer, DJ, and competitor, I burned out. In retrospect, I should have stopped going as often when I wasn’t having as good a […]

My grandmother Lili died last Friday morning in New York; she was 94 years old (almost 95). Lili, two days after her 90th birthday, in her apartment in New York. (2004) One of the things I’ve been remembering over the past few days is how she connected with my friends that she met. She recalled […]

Needing something to take to a dinner party, and inspired by some beautiful, if just-peaked, heirloom tomatoes at the Capitol Hill Farmer’s Market, I decided to make some saffron-tomato ice cream. My mom had given me some saffron a while back, and she likes to make a pasta sauce with fresh tomatoes, saffron, and cream […]

I’m back yet again from another business trip to China (sadly, not in business class). Even though I’m just two months in to my Chinese lessons, I found that little bit of knowledge of the language made a huge difference. I was able to understand quite a few words in conversations, and just being able […]

I opted to buy a replacement LCD and digitizer for my iPhone. Though the disassembly was a little tricky, it went just fine (this video was pretty helpful), and the phone is working again like a champ. Also working like a champ is my new computer – it’s not particularly revolutionary in design compared to […]

I’m actually pretty happy getting back to “normal” life after Drew and my Italian vacation. As previously mentioned, I’ve been traveling up a storm, and the prospect of not having to go anywhere on a plane for months is quite exciting. The trip was pretty great, though. We spent a few days in Venice before […]

I just finished sewing stripes on two togas – costumes for the “Ancient Rome”-themed party at Paganello. In about 14 hours, I’ll be on a plane headed for Italy, where I’ll spend the next two weeks. The itinerary is: Venice, Bologna, Rimini (for Paga), and finally a few days recuperating from the tournament in Cinque […]

Ni hao! In less than a week, I’m off to China for work for the fourth time in a year. Though I suspect the economic downturn will curb my future travel some, I still expect another couple trips in the coming year. So that I might navigate a little better when I’m over there, I’ve […]

Accidentally liveblogged dinner tonight on Twitter, might as well deadblog it, too: dsz123: Looking like I’ll spend the evening shuffling between the bar at the hotel and the bar at clarklewis (http://www.clarklewispdx.com/). Rough. Today, February 27, 2009, 4 hours ago dsz123: Appetizer: sunnyside egg with creamy polenta and Oregon white truffles Today, February 27, 2009, […]

Demine went well, and we raised over $3,000 for the Landmine Relief Fund, a little short of our goal, but a respectable sum all the same. And, as promised, here’s a little writeup about making landmine shaped chocolates for the event. Lest you think my radio/blog silence implies a lack of activity, know that I’ve […]

I have a couple friends who have traveled to Cambodia in recent years and visited the Landmine Museum. The founder of the museum — Aki Ra, a former child soldier of the Khmer Rouge — is working to make his country safer and raise awareness about the millions of landmines and unexploded ordinance scattered around. […]

I put up a few pictures from Hong Kong and China (mostly HK, really) here. I was torn when I was packing about bringing my D70. It takes up lots of room and is a bit of a pain to lug around, but boy does it take great photos. Instead, I opted for running shoes […]

Happy 2009! If the internet is to be believed (and in this case, I think it is), it’s been just under a month since I last posted to my blog. I just haven’t felt motivated, and while I know that’s “okay,” I do at least wonder why. One thing I realized is that for me, […]

It’s been a busy couple of weeks with the holidays approaching, but I haven’t forgotten about writing up my turkey experience, and there are plenty more stories to share. I probably won’t have a chance to post anything ’til I’m on the East Coast next week, but keep an eye out then…

It was an exciting weekend not just because of the whole Thanksgiving/turkey thing; I witnessed some of the first signs of life in the robot arm: http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=2392736&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=1&show_portrait=0&color=&fullscreen=1 More details on both the turkeys and robot arm to follow!

Thanksgiving’s coming right up, and this year promises some changes from years past. It’s true I’ll be in Seattle with friends instead of with family in New York (and I’ll miss them), but the biggest difference is that by Wednesday afternoon, I’ll be very well acquainted with our turkey, Mashed Potato: Affectionately (but not too […]

As currently planned, from the 21st of December to the 19th of January, I’ll be in: Boston, New York, Boston (again), Lexington Park (Maryland), DC, Seattle (briefly), Taipei (possibly), Hong Kong, Dongguan, Hong Kong (again), Los Angeles (LeiOut!), and finally back home to Seattle. Yowsah!

Overall, I’m pleased with the outcome of last week’s election: of course Obama, but also Chris Gregoire, the majority in the House and Senate, and the multitude of ballot initiatives that Washington voters managed to sort through and get right. Unfortunately, there was some collateral damage, most notably, Prop 8 in California. Though far from […]

Two editorials on Obama that caught my eye last Friday: one by David Brooks, the other by Paul Krugman. Both smart men, they have vastly different takes on how the president-elect should approach his upcoming term. We had Craft Day on Sunday, and also took the opportunity to officially rename it Crafternoon. I didn’t take […]

I left a relatively small election night party in downtown Seattle last night to head up to a friend’s house on Capitol Hill, but never made it there. The atmosphere downtown around 9:30 was festive – Obama had won, and both he & McCain had given their speeches – but not much was going on […]

Taipei was a whirlwind of a week: two days travel (one on either end), three days on the ground. I packed about as much into those three days as I could: visiting a college friend, eating all sorts of fried goodies, wandering neighborhoods, visiting bars & dancing ’til all hours at clubs, and, oh yeah, […]

Just a quick note to say I found the secure notes app I’d been looking for on the iPhone. Check out mSecure. It’s $1.99, and does exactly what I want it to do. How often can you say that about something?

Well, a bunch of things conspired to postpone our $7/day food challenge. Another time, I hope… One of those things is an upcoming work trip to Taipei. I just learned I’d be going last Friday, and leave on Sunday. I’ll be in the city for all of 3 days, and have plenty to prepare for […]

Recently, a friend in the public health field quoted an article or report that said the average American eats for about $7 per day, and then went on to suggest we should try it for a week. The latest data I can find is from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in their 2005 Consumer Expenditures […]

I spent yesterday on/near Mt. Rainier, hiking above Mowich Lake. I put up some photos from the day here. You can also see a panorama I took using the Gigapan hardware in Spray Park here. It was fun to play with the Gigapan device, but it has a few fundamental problems. It’s too big to […]

My body’s taken quite a beating in the last couple weeks: a sprained ankle, bruised hand, dislocated AC joint (shoulder), and about 8-10 bee/hornet stings. Not so fun! That makes me a little glad the frisbee season’s over and very glad that recovery can begin in earnest (the ankle’s been bothering me for quite a […]

I’ve really been enjoying my new iPhone; it’s a first-generation version I bought used from a friend who upgraded. I followed these instructions to unlock the phone to work with T-Mobile, and it went without a hitch. I haven’t installed lots of applications, but the basics (phone, web, maps, contacts and calendar) are intuitive and […]

The big news for today? I’m getting an iphone: Granted, it’s a first generation model (used, about to be hacked to work on T-Mobile), but I’m still pretty psyched!

Recent cheers & jeers: Boo: Full Tilt Ice Cream turned out to be a bust. They were out of most flavors, the ones I tried weren’t so hot, the pinball tables they have aren’t so hot either, it turns out it’s hard to play pinball and eat ice cream at the same time, and there […]

In lieu of a real update, I’ll just say I’ve been busy, and, for the most part, having fun of late. I’ve finally decided to do some site upgradin’, in part ’cause I want a new look, and in part ’cause Blogger still hasn’t fixed their site-feed bug, but I’m too lazy to switch to […]

I’ve been meaning to put together a page with my favorite spots in Seattle for quite a while, but I just got around to it in time for Rif & Anna’s upcoming visit. Check it out here, and feel free to send along other recommendations. It’s most definitely a work in progress, but it’s a […]

Last week, I finally got around to making a new housing/frame for my Chumby, which I won a few months back from Bunnie’s Blog. I like the idea of the device (essentially an internet-enabled alarm clock) well enough, but the design really didn’t do it for me, and I tore it apart the day it […]

I had a great, if quick, trip to the East Coast and got back on Thursday night. I was in Boston, northwest Connecticut, New Haven, Manhattan, and Boston again, all in the span of 7 days, and saw tons of people (in large part, because of Tova & Pete’s wedding) along the way. I’d say […]

I had an amazing 4th of July weekend, starting out with a trip to Safeco Field for a Mariner’s game, followed by three fantastic days at Potlatch, and capped by a stellar dinner at The Dahlia Lounge Sunday night. Potlatch was spectacular, in many ways. Our team, DarkHorse, was pretty high profile – we had […]

Shadrach had a great weekend near Portland playing at Logjam. We played really well as a team (especially since it was the first tourney of the year), had a lot of fun at the party, and actually did quite well. Life continues to be busy, so I continue not to update this blog too often, […]

Well, my being “busy for at least another week or two” turned in to three or four, and I’m still scheduled to the gills. What’s surprising is that I’ve gotten pretty used to it. In the past, I’d get sick (from too much stress and lack of sleep) or just get fed up enough that […]

I’m still really busy, mostly with frisbee, at least for another week or two. So here are some sites that actually get updated with reasonable frequency: In Maseru – Becky’s blog about living and working in Lesotho XKCD – a brilliant, geeky web comic published three times a week Little Chef. Big Knife – a […]

It’s been way longer than I wanted it to be since I last posted. In part, I’m settling in to the new job, and it’s not really appropriate to write from work, but I suppose the gap is mostly due to sheer business. I’m working hard at setting up Shadrach (the frisbee team I played […]

If you’re in Seattle in the next week, you really owe it to yourself to see Planey B-Boy, a great documentary about an international breakdancing competition (it’s playing at the Varsity). Not only is the dancing unbelievable, but it’s a very-well put together movie – not too much sappiness, but still retains some humanity, and […]

Well, my email is back up, but my distaste for Cedant’s services remains. Drew suggested I might wait ’til he switched over to a new server/host and then buy some space off him there – I think I can hold out another couple months, and we’ll go from there.

I just spent 15 minutes on hold trying to reach Cedant, my web & email hosting service, only to find out that indeed, their whole email system has been down for 36 hours and won’t be back up ’til tomorrow. But they couldn’t have been bothered to let people know or put up a notice […]

I had a good enough trip down to San Diego last weekend for One Love, One Beach, but in retrospect, I could’ve used a weekend at home. When I bought tickets, I had no idea when I’d be in China, and having only a week in Seattle before leaving again might not have been the […]

I was definitely a little worried when it was announced that someone bought the Odd Fellows Hall on Capitol Hill. Not only does it house the most excellent Century Ballroom, but also a number of excellent small theater & dance companies that might otherwise not exist. Rumor has it their rents will go up, and […]

I’ve been back from China for about a week, and though it was a great trip, I’m happy to be home. Of course my first day back, Jean and Jared invited me out to their birthday dinner, to Taiwanese food. I finally did get my American food fix today when I had a great burger […]

My week in China was pretty great. I ate incredibly well, if exotically, got to see a couple different factories, and generally got a decent sense for Guangdong Province (I was in Dongguan and Shenzhen). Again my friend Patrick was a fantastic host – we spent Saturday morning touring his factory (he’s the hairdryer king!), […]

Greetings from China! It’s been a fascinating trip so far, with visits to several different factories (like watching How It’s Made live!) and some great eats. More to follow.

I had a great day in Hong Kong, although I barely scratched the surface of the city. After a bunch of wandering around and window shopping this afternoon, I got the royal treatment this evening when an old business contact took me out for dinner. We went to this amazing seafood restaurant in a fishing […]

I’m posting from the Narita airport, outside Tokyo. I survived the long flight (Seattle-Tokyo) and soon head off to Hong Kong. It’s either one in the morning or four in the afternoon. If I figure it out, I’ll let you know.

The Pi(e) Party was a great time, though I think my apartment reached capacity during the evening; I might have to find a new venue for next year. I think folks really stepped up the pie-making this year, too – we covered quite the pie gamut, from savory (spanikopita & curry pot pie) to sweet […]

Dinner at the Herbfarm last night was something else! The food was spectacular, and the wine pairings spot on. Highlights include a not insubstantial amount of Kobe beef prepared a few different ways (braised Kobe beef cheek is heavenly), some excellent smoked steelhead, a fantastic baked Alaska for dessert, and a Madeira from 1912 to […]

I had a great time last weekend in Leavenworth, eating, drinking, snowshoeing and hot-tubbing with a great group of frisbee friends. And the German food wasn’t bad, either – I’m hoping to make some kaesespaetzle sometime soon. It’s gonna be a busy couple of weeks ahead, with Slog in the Bog, spring league starting up, […]

It’s been gorgeous out in Seattle lately, so it would’ve been tough to stay in this weekend and work on the robot arm. But, for better or worse, I sprained my ankle at pickup yesterday, and had plenty of time to make some good progress. I’ve only found one minor (and fixable) error on the […]

It’s been nice to be back in Seattle and know I’m here for a couple weeks in a row. There’s a pretty good chance I’ll be heading to China in March, so I’d better get my quality, at-home time in while I can. It was a great weekend to be in town, what with the […]

It’s been a fun week in the Bay Area, which included some great meals and visits with lots of folks I hadn’t seen in a while. Laura & Alex and I had a great night of eating & bowling in Palo Alto on Monday, and I had one of the best games of my life: […]

If you live in Seattle, you owe it to yourself to check out the puppet show (for grownups – it’s “delightfully inappropriate”) A Boy in the Beastly City. It’s like all the best parts of Family Guy turned into a silhouette puppet show about a boy who lost his monkey – it’s got musical numbers, […]

According to the 4pcb website, my robot arm circuit boards shipped today. I’ll be in San Francisco all next week, so I’ll have to wait to play EE ’til the next weekend. Should be a fun trip – I’m going for a ProEngineer training class, and will have some time in the evenings to catch […]

L.A. pictures coming soon. In the meantime, you can drool over the menu at The Counter, where I ate on Sunday night. Unlike this guy, I chose sparingly, and had a great burger with ginger soy glaze, avocado, fried onion strings, scallions and carrots. In other (big) news, I ordered the PCB for the robot […]

My L.A. weekend was everything I’d hoped it’d be and more. Pictures and more to come soon.

It’s actually nice to be back in work mode these days, but I’m not complaining about my upcoming trip to L.A. for Lei-Out. Should be a great weekend of frisbee, especially since it’s supposed to be 20 degrees warmer there than in Seattle. It’s my first trip to L.A., but I think I won’t have […]

Well, I’m winding down my last week of freedom before starting the new job on Monday. I’ve been playing plenty of frisbee, seeing some great movies, eating well, and even doing a little PCB layout. I am looking forward to working, though – it’ll be nice to be back in a rhythm and have regular […]

I spent the better part of my afternoon reassembling my D70 after trying to fix the aforementioned CHA bug. You can read a bit about it here. So far, so good – no more errors!

I happened to be browsing his blog when Bunnie posted Name that Ware December 2007. I spent about an hour thinking and researching what it could be, and think I figured it out. Unfortunately, I was tired, and got excited about figuring it out, so my comments are pretty incoherent – too bad. Whether I […]

Well, after I found some instructions for taking apart the D70, I figured I’d give cleaning the CF card contacts a shot before sending it off for professional help. It’s been out-of-warranty for a couple years now, and I’m usually okay at this kind of thing (at the very least, not breaking it). So my […]

Dinner on New Year’s turned out quite well – the crab cakes were fantastic, and the lemon mousse turned out great. Sarah brought back homegrown, organic lemons from her parents’ farm in Maine, and they really made the dish. I ran the leftover mousse through my ice cream maker yesterday – no surprise that it […]

I’m going over to a friend’s house for New Year’s Eve dinner tonight. They’re making crab cakes, I’m making this. Should be quite a meal!

After some reading and experimenting this afternoon, I managed to get the plotter to plot arbitrary PDF files. Sweet.

I’m hoping to finish the layout for the robot arm this week, and send the design out for fabrication before I start work on the 14th. As part of that effort, I figured I could use the new plotter to make a nice plot of the PCB. Unfortunately, getting that up and running is a […]

Thanks to Jared & Chika, I became the proud custodian of a plotter today. I’ve got plenty of other projects going right now, so it may be a bit before I get it up and plotting, but it should be fun once I do.

Unfortunately, my D70 has been exhibiting some problems lately. Starting a couple months ago, it would occasionally show ‘CHA’ on the LCD instead of the number of images remaining, and wouldn’t record pictures until I cycled the power. I read a bit about this on the inter-webs, and that seemed to implicate my CF memory […]

I probably won’t start work until at least mid-January, which leaves plenty of time for working on projects, eating well, and a possible visit to Canada. Also on the January schedule is Lei-Out, a beach ultimate tournament in L.A. over MLK weekend. Plenty to look forward to.

Big news this afternoon: I got a job! Actually, better than a job, I got the job I was gunning for. This isn’t a blog about work, so the company goes unnamed, but you can always email me if you wanna know more.

Following Drew’s advice, I revised the new layout of the site to use CSS elements to format the page instead of tables. It reads a whole lot cleaner (at least the source code does), and I’m liking how it’s looking. Next up, the new Projects page. I’m also still fighting Blogger on one issue. When […]

Things are finally shaping up on the job front, thankfully. It’s definitely been longer than I would’ve liked, but it seems like I’m on the home stretch. In the meantime, I’ve been keeping busy enough. I celebrated Hanukkah by eating latkes 4 out of the 8 nights. Nothing like fried goodness served with sour cream […]

For the first time in my life, I think, I had a completely satisfactory experience shopping at Radio Shack today. I’m doing a bit of consulting and needed to build a quick little circuit. Rather than trekking to Fry’s or waiting for a DigiKey order to ship, I decided to risk the ‘Shack, and it […]

After my mom made Nigella Lawson’s Clementine Cake when I was home for Thanksgiving, I decided to give it a shot. I found some great organic satsuma’s, ground up some almonds, and was very impressed with the results, especially considering how easy a recipe it is. I didn’t have a springform pan, but lining a […]

After some feedback (thanks!), I’ve decided to continue to host images on my own site after the redesign. It gives me more control over how images are displayed, and also allows the image galleries to retain the same feel as the rest of the site. Now the trick is to figure out how to manage […]

I put up a random group of photos from my recent East Coast trip – check ’em out here. As part of the site redesign, I’m considering how best to display photos. Given a choice between Picasa Web albums (as above), Flickr albums (like this one) and my own HTML albums (like this one), do […]

I’ve been playing a bit with an updated layout for the site. So far, it’s nothing drastic, but hopefully things come across a little cleaner. It’s also a good opportunity to update my HTML/CSS skills, which date to about 1997. Reading a bunch at W3Schools, I gather quite a bit has changed since then. If […]

My East Coast trip was a whirlwind one – 3 days in Boston, 3 in New York, bookended by late night/early morning flights. From the outset, I was in sleep debt, unable to sleep on the redeye. It eventually caught up to me and I caught a bit of a cold. But, it was overall […]

The ice cream came out quite well, I think. If I had to make some suggestions (as per their request): I think the sage in the coulis is an excellent start, but it wasn’t enough for me. I went ahead and steeped a few more leaves in the milk/cream mixture as it was simmering, which […]

This afternoon’s experiment: strawberry sage ice cream. I changed the recipe a bit – I used frozen strawberries (it is November, after all), used lime zest instead of lemon in the puree, and used a fair bit less sugar than they suggested. I also put a couple of sage leaves in the cream as it […]

One of the things that was really bugging me about Blogger (and prompting me to consider WordPress) was the inability to create links within archives to the previous and next archive files. So on the page for March 2001, I wanted a link to February’s archive and April’s archive. Since Blogger didn’t have an easy […]

I’m really looking forward to my upcoming East Coast trip – I leave for Boston on Saturday night. It’ll be great to see friends and family, but it’ll also be nice to have a week away from Seattle. It’s been a rough couple of weeks in the job search department (though things are looking up), […]

Had a chance recently to photograph and write up my latest knitting project (no, not the sweater I’ve been working on for almost 10 years): a scarf, knit on the bias. On the sweater front, though, some friends came over today to do some knitting and I started sleeve #1. I think the sweater and […]

An email this morning from Lauren not only alerted me to an ice cream-related call for reviews/contest but also to the fact that I haven’t used my ice cream maker in a couple weeks. What a shame! The strawberry and sage ice cream sounds pretty great – I might give it a try even though […]

The other night, my friend Mike lamented that his digital camera (a Canon SD450) stopped working after a couple years and a couple too many trips to the beach. He knows I like taking stuff apart, and asked if I’d be interested in trying to fix it. Of course! This afternoon, we took the thing […]

I’m happy to report that, with some professional EE help, I found the source of the problems I was seeing with the robot arm. At this point, I’m ready to finish laying out the circuit board and start writing a bunch of software.

After a couple of months and (presumably) a bunch of emails, Google Maps fixed the bug that was giving me grief and preventing me from posting about my Portland Bike Trip. Without further ado, you can now read my thoughts & summary of the trip.

I went Monday night to Benaroya Hall to see Joanna Newsom. After going last December to her concert at the Showbox, I was curious how it would be to see her with a full symphony and in a much larger venue. The orchestra behind her was talented, but actually made the experience a lot less […]
